lagu ini diangkat dari puisi John Doone tahun 1623, yang kemudian dijadikan novel oleh Ernest Hemingway dengan judul For Whom The Bell Tolls. novel ini menceritakan tentang tentara muda Amerika bernama Robert Jordan yang tergabung dalam Brigade International. Sebagai seorang ahli dalam pengguna bahan peledak, ia di tugaskan untuk meledakkan sebuah jembatan selama serangan terhadap kota segovia. mereka mencoba menguasai jembatan perbatasan pada saat perang saudara di spanyol.
